Measuring the carbon footprint of health facilities:  Introduction to the Carbon Management Tool

This training course is designed for health sector professionals. The course equips learners with the skills to calculate and track the carbon footprint of healthcare operations across Scopes 1-3, to estimate emissions avoided through renewable energy use, and to monitor water consumption.

The course provides an in-depth guide to using the Aga Khan Development Network’s (AKDN) Carbon Management Tool, empowering learners to begin their carbon footprinting journey.

The Carbon Management Tool has been utilised by Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) since 2020, implemented across 400 AKHS facilities in eight countries.

Endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the tool has been shared with over 40 countries through their Ministries of Health and Environment. WHO has coordinated training sessions at both country and regional levels, with additional stakeholders, including NGOs, consultants, and academia, also trained in using the tool.

This video-based course is publicly available, along with the latest version of the tool and a step-by-step guide for users (available in English and French). The latest version of the tool can be obtained by writing to healthcarbonfootprint@akdn.org or through the Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health (ATACH) website.
