Development Dialogues in Education

This free practical training on how to lead development dialogues in education is a professional development resource for teacher mentors and inspectors. It supports participants in strengthening mentoring practice through structured observation, dialogue, and feedback techniques.

This course is the second in a series of three courses in the Inclusive Learning Environment Courses Series. The first course, that you should make sure to watch before this one, is entitled Creating an Inclusive Learning Environment. The third course is entitled Facilitating an Inclusive Learning Environment Workshop. All three training courses are available for free on The Learning Hub.

The course duration is 2 hours and 15 minutes.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
LO1 Explain the purpose and structure of development dialogues in supporting professional growth in education settings
LO2 Describe key concepts and terminology used in development dialogues and mentoring processes
LO3 Explain the role of observation, listening, questioning, and feedback in effective mentoring practice
LO4 Describe how to conduct structured observations of teaching and learning practice
LO5 Explain how to provide constructive feedback that supports reflection and improvement
LO6 Describe how mentor-mentee agreements and professional development plans support ongoing development
LO7 Explain how to apply mentoring skills in real development dialogue contexts

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

• Conduct structured classroom or practice observations to support professional learning
• Apply active listening and questioning techniques to facilitate reflective dialogue
• Deliver constructive, development-focused feedback to colleagues or mentees
• Establish clear mentor-mentee agreements that define expectations and responsibilities
• Support the creation and implementation of professional development plans
• Facilitate development dialogues that promote continuous improvement in educational practice
• Integrate mentoring skills into routine professional interactions within education settings
