Creating an Inclusive Learning Environment

This free practical training on creating an inclusive learning environment is designed for preschool, primary, and secondary school teachers, teacher mentors, and education practitioners who want to strengthen inclusive teaching practice.

The course introduces a structured guide to inclusive learning environments, focusing on key dimensions of classroom quality such as emotional climate, differentiation, facilitation, assessment, and learner engagement. It supports participants to recognise effective practices and understand how inclusive environments promote participation, equity, and improved learning outcomes for all learners.

This course is the first in a series of three free training courses in the Inclusive Learning Environment Courses series. The two courses that follow are Development Dialogues in Education and Facilitating an Inclusive Learning Environment Workshop. It is available in English and Arabic and was developed as part of the Aga Khan Foundation’s Education programme. The course duration for this course is 5.5 hours.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

LO1 Describe pluralism and ethics and their significance in inclusive education settings

LO2 Identify the key dimensions that contribute to an inclusive learning environment and describe their purpose in supporting all learners

LO3 Describe how clear learning objectives and logical sequencing support inclusive and accessible lesson design

LO4 Recognise the characteristics of a positive emotional climate and its importance in learner engagement

LO5 Define teacher sensitivity and identify its role in responding appropriately to learners’ emotional and academic needs

LO6 Identify basic facilitation techniques that support equitable participation and inclusive interaction

LO7 Describe the function of classroom agreements in fostering mutual respect and safety in learning environments

LO8 Recognise common differentiation strategies and describe how they support diverse learning needs

LO9 Identify the benefits of both individual and collaborative learning and identify strategies to implement them inclusively

LO10: Identify foundational strategies for learning to learn, giving feedback, and assessing progress that support inclusive teaching practices

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply inclusive education principles when planning and delivering classroom activities
  • Use structured lesson design to support learner participation and understanding
  • Adjust classroom practice to promote a positive emotional learning environment
  • Respond appropriately to learners’ academic and emotional needs in real time
  • Use facilitation techniques that encourage equitable participation among learners
  • Establish and maintain classroom agreements that support safe and respectful learning
  • Apply differentiation strategies to support diverse learning needs within a single classroom
  • Facilitate both individual and collaborative learning activities effectively
  • Incorporate feedback and assessment approaches that support learner progress and inclusion
