Implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum in Dadaab and Kakuma Refugee Camps
How is the shift from a content- to competency-based curriculum being realised in refugee settings in Kenya? What can be done to support teachers to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to deliver the new competency-based curriculum in their classrooms?
In 2021 the Aga Khan Foundation, in partnership with UNHCR and Samuel Hall, prototyped their values-based approach to teacher professional development, an approach proven effective in non-refugee settings of Kenya.
Through this study, hear the views and experience of teachers, school leaders, and other education actors in Dadaab and Kakuma concerning the new competency-based curriculum, their reaction to the values-based course, and how this course could become transformative for teachers and schools, not just in refugee settings, but across education systems.
