Introduction to Gender Analysis

This course is designed for Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) staff, as well as anyone working in a civil society organisation in either programmes, monitoring and evaluation, or partnerships. It provides practical guidance on conducting gender analysis to ensure policies and projects account for gender dynamics and promote equity. Learners are encouraged to first take the introductory course “Gender Mainstreaming in Project Management,” available on The Learning Hub, before enrolling in the “Introduction to Gender Analysis” course.

This course is available in English and Spanish. The course duration is 1.5 hours.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

LO1 Describe how gender influences the design and impact of policies, programmes, and projects on different groups

LO2 Explain the principles and purpose of gender analysis in development contexts

LO3 Identify the key domains used in gender analysis to assess gender dynamics comprehensively

LO4 Describe the steps involved in conducting a gender analysis

LO5 Identify quantitative and qualitative data sources used to understand gender norms and disparities

LO6 Describe how evidence from gender analysis is used to inform programme design and recommendations

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate understanding of how gender dynamics influence development outcomes across different population groups
• Interpret the core principles and frameworks that underpin gender analysis practice
• Recognise the key domains used to structure gender analysis in programme and policy contexts
• Demonstrate understanding of the sequential steps required to plan and conduct a gender analysis
• Identify appropriate data sources for analysing gender-related issues in different contexts
• Apply awareness of how gender analysis informs more equitable and effective programme design
