Communicating and Collaborating with Dispersed Teams

This free online course is aimed at organisations seeking to strengthen internal communication, coordination, and collaboration within dispersed and remote teams.

The course explores the principles and practices of effective remote teamwork across different time zones and working contexts. Participants will examine how to set clear expectations, use synchronous and asynchronous communication tools effectively, and participate in or facilitate virtual meetings. The course also covers practical approaches to managing communication channels such as email, video conferencing, instant messaging, and collaborative digital tools, with a focus on improving clarity, efficiency, and team cohesion.

This course is available in Arabic, English, and Portuguese. The course duration is 2 hours.

 

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

LO1 Explain the principles and challenges of communication and collaboration in dispersed and remote teams

LO2 Identify appropriate tools and approaches for effective internal communication across distributed teams

LO3 Describe how synchronous and asynchronous communication methods are used to support collaboration

LO4 Explain how to set expectations and establish effective communication norms within remote teams

LO5 Describe best practices for using email, video conferencing, instant messaging, and collaborative tools

LO6 Explain how to plan, participate in, and facilitate effective virtual meetings

LO7 Identify strategies for improving team coordination, engagement, and communication efficiency in dispersed working environments

 

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply effective communication practices to support collaboration in dispersed teams
  • Use digital communication tools appropriately based on context, purpose, and audience
  • Set and manage clear expectations for communication within remote and hybrid teams
  • Participate confidently in synchronous and asynchronous communication channels
  • Facilitate structured and effective virtual meetings with clear agendas and outcomes
  • Improve clarity and efficiency in team communication across time zones and locations
  • Contribute to stronger team cohesion and coordination in remote working environments

This course was produced as part of the Aga Khan Foundation’s Civil Society programme.

The course can be completed as an online-only course or in a blended format where learners first watch the videos and then engage in a synchronous in-person session. A Facilitator Guide is available for download for the synchronous in-person session.
