Empowering Women in Rural India through Goat Rearing Best Practices

This free video course in Hindi was developed for female farmers in India who are looking to grow their income by becoming Pashu Sakhis – community-based consultants who provide goat rearing advice and services.

The course explains key aspects of goat health and management practices, including:

  • Goat behaviour,
  • Goat breeding,
  • Goat vaccination,
  • Goat feed,
  • Goat castration, and
  • Goat deworming.

The course also explains various aspects of the Pashu Sakhi model, which enables female farmers to become village-level entrepreneurs. This includes:

  • Goat marketing,
  • Community goat breeding,
  • Identifying healthy and sick goats, and
  • Economic and social benefits of goats.

The Pashu Sakhi model being a valuable platform for disseminating key health and nutrition related messages to marginal farming communities, the course also covers:

  • Children’s health and nutrition,
  • Women’s health and nutrition, and
  • Rights and entitlements for women in India.

This short online course was produced by the Aga Khan Foundation in India with the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The video was produced as part of the Aga Khan Foundation’s agriculture and food security programme.
