Business Skills for Civil Society Organisations
This free online course is designed for civil society organisation practitioners from East Africa and beyond who want to strengthen the way they apply business skills and mindsets within their organisations. The course explores how CSOs can integrate practical business approaches into organisational management, client and membership engagement, financial management, and resource mobilisation.
Participants will examine how business thinking can improve decision-making, strengthen service delivery, support transparent financial practices, and enhance organisational sustainability. The course also introduces tools and approaches for understanding clients and members, managing costs and revenues, and using data to inform communication and performance.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to apply core business skills to improve efficiency, accountability, and sustainability in civil society organisations. This course is available in English and Portuguese and the course duration is 3 hours.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
LO1 Define key business mindsets and explain how they can be applied in civil society organisational practice
LO2 Describe how different mindsets (growth, learning, investability, and empathy) influence organisational decision-making and programme delivery
LO3 Explain how civil society organisations identify, engage, and manage clients, members, and volunteers
LO4 Describe how data is collected and used to support communication, reporting, and engagement with stakeholders
LO5 Identify key principles of financial management, including terminology, roles, and systems used in CSOs
LO6 Describe approaches to cost management, including fee setting, dues collection, and organisational cost tracking
LO7 Identify different resource mobilisation approaches and explain how they contribute to organisational sustainability
LO8 Describe how transparent financial management practices support accountability and organisational performance
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of how business mindsets can be integrated into civil society organisational operations
- Interpret how organisational data can be used to strengthen communication, reporting, and decision-making
- Recognise effective approaches to managing client and membership relationships in a CSO context
- Apply awareness of basic financial management principles to organisational planning and oversight
- Understand how cost structures and revenue streams contribute to organisational sustainability
- Identify opportunities for strengthening resource mobilisation within civil society organisations
- Strengthen awareness of how transparency and accountability improve organisational credibility and performance
