Gender Equality Marker: A Tool for AKF

The Aga Khan Foundation has a tool that helps us to track and report on gender equality and women and girls’ empowerment in our projects, the Gender Equality Marker (GEM). In this short course for AKF employees you will gain an understanding of the purpose of the Gender Equality Marker tool. You will learn when in the project cycle the tool is used and gain an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the different units and staff in applying the GEM. You will also become familiar with the three steps in applying the tool. The course duration is 35 minutes.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
LO1 Explain the purpose and importance of the Gender Equality Marker (GEM) within AKF programmes.
LO2 Identify who should be involved in applying the GEM and when it should be used within the programme cycle.
LO3 Identify common forms of unconscious bias and recognise how they can affect workplace decisions and relationships. .
LO4 Describe the three steps involved in applying the GEM to an AKF project.
LO5 Identify how gender is integrated across the four GEM areas of analysis, activities, participation, and monitoring, evaluation, research and learning (MERL).
LO6 Explain how the GEM Vetting Form is completed based on an assessment and discussion of gender integration within a project.
LO7 Describe how GEM results can be shared and used to strengthen gender mainstreaming within AKF programmes.

Professional Objectives
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
– Apply the GEM process to relevant AKF projects.
– Assess how a project addresses gender roles and relations.
– Review project analysis, activities, participation, and MERL through a gender lens.
– Work with relevant colleagues and stakeholders to discuss gender integration within a project.
– Complete the GEM Vetting Form using evidence from the project assessment and discussion.
– Communicate GEM results to relevant colleagues and stakeholders.
– Use GEM findings to identify opportunities for strengthening gender mainstreaming in projects and programmes.
